I see a lot of people make mistakes when networking. Here are a few I've made myself and learned from: 1. Not following up: It's not enough to meet someone new. You have to follow up to build a relationship. Send a LinkedIn request with a personalized note, an email, or a DM on Twitter. Keep the conversation going. 2. Not giving value: If you're asking for someone's time, make sure you're giving value in return. This could be as simple as sharing a relevant article, offering to help with a project, or making an introduction. 3. Not being clear about what you want: If you're reaching out to someone new, be clear about why you're reaching out. What do you want from them? How can they help you? What can you offer in return? 4. Not doing your homework: Don't ask questions that can be easily answered by a Google search or by reading someone's LinkedIn profile. Do your homework and come prepared with thoughtful questions. 5. Not being respectful of someone's time: If you're asking for a meeting, be respectful of the other person's time.
